Back in 1993 a sprinkling of a mere 80 girls' team was scattered across England. Fast forward ten years and not only are there 4,200 girls' teams, but research tells us that in a given month a staggering 1.4 million 7-15 year old girls are taking part in some form of football activity.

Put the microscope on Cambridgeshire and you'll find 22 girls clubs, with over 40 teams playing in four Leagues, and an overview of the women's game will show 10 women's clubs; a 20% increase on last year. Not bad going.

On show at today's match we've got a Histon Hornets girls team taking part in pre-match and half-time activities.

Centre of Excellence Squads At The Abbey Stadium

There are currently 42 Licensed Centres of Excellence that are based at F.A. Premier League, F.A. Women's Premier League and Football League Clubs. These centres provide a sound structure for the development of elite players aged 10-16 years with specialised coaching.

All squads take part in the Eastern Region Girls Centre of Excellence League and play twice a season against: Northampton Town, Wimbledon, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Rushden & Diamonds and Norwich City.

It is vital that we give our talented young players access to the best coaching and fixture programme as well as ensuring that players have the chance to make a career out of their sport.
