Cambridge United Women's Reserves v Whitton United
Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004
It would be easy to say that this game was a dead cert guaranteed win from the off. Whitton United haven't been having the best of seasons, languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Region Division One with a goal difference bordering on the comical.
So it was with high hopes of a feeding frenzy that the Reserves arrived at Girton Pavilion on a cold and grey Sunday lunchtime. Things began to look even more worrying when a brief headcount revealed just 9 players for Whitton.
True to expectations Whitton were happy to sit back and crowd the 18 yard box. However, despite the heroic efforts of their keeper (man of the match by a long way) it was not long before United were 1-0 up and by half time had consolidated their lead to 3 goals to nil. Having said that the opportunity to play some mouth watering football had not really been taken.

The second half brought a more relaxed mood and some better movement of the ball and soon goals began to flow. The final score, 8-0, was satisfying. Two balls were lost in the pursuit of goals (burst on the thorns behind the opposition's goal) but no bones were broken.
Next week sees the Reserves away at Norwich for some tougher footballing action which they will relish.
