From the Boardroom
Welcome to this evening's Blue Square Premiership game at the Trade Recruitment Stadium. Our visitors are York City, whose players, supporters and officials have made the trip down the A1.
This is the return League game for the two teams, only six and a half weeks since we played at Kit Kat Crescent. On that day, in my opinion, the sides cancelled each other out in a nil-nil draw. There is, however, enough attacking skill in both camps to promise more goals this evening.
Over a thousand free tickets in the South Stand have been offered to students from Cambridge University for this game. This was possible due to collaboration with their Students Union with the aim of bringing Town and Gown closer together. We hope that there has been a good take up of this offer and that everyone enjoys the game.
You are more than welcome to make Cambridge United your 'second team' whilst you are studying in the City. You never know, but you may get the habit and it could be 'United Forever'.
The past fortnight has seen the Club end its interest for this season in both the Setanta Shield and the FA Cup. Defeats away at AFC Telford and Kidderminster may have taken away the opportunity for Cup success and any associated boost to finances, but our season is far from over. As things stand we are very much in touch with the BSP leaders and a run of wins, preferably including one this evening, will put us firmly up in the frame for promotion to the Football League.
Since our last home game the Youth team achieved a superb 4-1 FA Youth Cup victory over Colchester United. It was a good team performance and the players were a credit to Cambridge United. Many of the fans who witnessed the game spread the word and anticipation was further increased last Wednesday for the Second Round home tie against Northampton Town. On the day the boys could not find a way past an organised defence and commanding goalkeeper and bowed out 2-nil.
The same players compete as CRC in the Ridgeons Premier Division, with their home games played at this ground. For more details of their fixtures, please see their fixture list and match reports in the 'Reserves' link in the Team section of this website: www.cambridge-united.co.uk/page/ReservesIndex/0,,10423,00.html We would love to see more people in attendance for these games and you are most welcome to attend.
It is with sadness that the Club heard of the recent death of former trainer Frank Dursley. Frank passed away at his Cambridge home on Saturday 1st November and his funeral was held yesterday.
He was the 'sponge man' and assistant manager to Bill Leivers during the very successful years for the Club in the late 60s and early 70s. It was at this time that United were winning the Southern League two years running, being voted into the Football League and making our debut in the Fourth Division. Our thoughts are very much with his wife, family and friends at this sad time.
