LOAN NEWS

Cambridge United continue their early business in the January transfer window, with Queen’s Park Rangers defender Darnell Furlong switching to the Abbey Stadium on a month loan deal.

The 20-year old right back joins the U’s having spent the first half of the season on loan at Northampton Town, where he made 10 appearances for the Cobblers including the fixture against United in October.

Furlong also has the experience of playing in the Premier League, where he featured three times for QPR against Hull City, Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

The youngster is the second defender through the door for Shaun Derry’s side since the transfer window re-opened, following Saturday’s arrival of West Ham left back Lewis Page who joined on a month deal.

Happy to have secured the services of Furlong, Derry said: “We are pleased to confirm the loan signing of Darnell, who is a player that has already proven he can play at this level during his loan spell with Northampton Town.

“He also adds the experience of playing at a higher level with QPR last season.”

Meanwhile, Mickey Demetriou and Terry Kennedy have returned to their parent clubs following the conclusion of their respective loan spells with the U’s.

Demetriou returns to Shrewsbury Town and Kennedy back to Sheffield United, and Cambridge United would like to place on record their thanks to the pair for their contribution this season.

The club can also confirm that Rory Gaffney has returned to the U’s, following a successful loan spell with Bristol Rovers.
