U'S PROGRESS INTO REGIONAL FINALS OF FOOTBALL LEAGUE GIRLS CUP

19 January 2016

FOOTBALL LEAGUE GIRLS UNDER CUP

Cambridge United were victorious in winning the Area Finals stage of the Football League’s Under 13 Cup last Friday.

Represented by Bottisham Village College, who were triumphant in the local club tournament staged at the end of last year to offer the chance to play in the Amber and Black jersey,  the girls continued their progress route to the final at Wembley Stadium with a superb display in Stevenage.

The Area Finals which were hosted by Stevenage Football Club and saw the U’s competing against Barnet, MK Dons, AFC Wimbledon, Stevenage FC, Peterborough United, Ipswich Town and Colchester United.

After a fantastic performance from the girls throughout, and with the team not conceding a single goal for the duration of the tournament, the day culminated with the team winning 2-0 in the final against Peterborough United.

Cambridge United Women and Girls Development Manager Paul Neary said: “It was a fantastic all round performance in the tournament with solid defending and prolific attacking resulting in a superb win in the final”.

Meanwhile Natalie Shenton from Bottisham Village College added: “I am really impressed with the commitment, hard work and tenacity that the girls put in to win the Area Finals.

“Despite coming up against tough opposition who in their own words were so much bigger and stronger, they battled hard, worked for each other and really demonstrated how far a little bit of teamwork and self-belief can go. I can’t wait to go to the next round and hopefully see the girls progress to Wembley.

“I would like to thank Paul and all the help Cambridge United have provided to date.”

Next up, the girls face the Regional Finals, which include the winners of the South Football League Clubs who were also successful at their respective Area Finals.

Success at that stage would then see them represent Cambridge United in the North vs South final, which will be held on the pitch ahead of the Johnstone Paint Trophy Final.
