MINGOIA SIGNS TWO YEAR DEAL WITH U'S

Cambridge United have agreed terms on a two-year deal with midfielder Piero Mingoia, who also unveils the U’s brand new 2016/17 home kit.

The 24-year old joins the U’s following a stellar season with Accrington Stanley in Sky Bet League Two, where he was an ever-present and recently scored in their play-off semi-final against AFC Wimbledon.

Beginning his career within Watford’s youth ranks, Mingoia signed his first professional deal ahead of the 2009/10 season before going on to make five appearances for the Hornets, scoring on debut against Hartlepool United in the FA Cup.

Loan spells followed during 2012 and 2013 for Hayes & Yeading, Boreham Wood, Brentford and Accrington Stanley, where he eventually moved permanently in August 2013.

Mingoia quickly become a key player for the Lancashire side, playing 41 times in his first full season, before repeating the feat last year, notching ten goals in that time. The Amber Army may recall the tricky midfielder registering three goals against the U’s in 2014/15.

Pleased to now be joining Cambridge United, Mingoia commented: “I’m absolutely delighted to get the deal done with the club.

“It was a tough decision to leave Accrington, but I was really attracted to what the club want to do here, and the fact that the Manager showed a real interest in me.

“Looking at the level that Shaun Derry played and seeing where he wants to take this club as the Manager, I wanted to work under him so joining Cambridge felt like a no brainer.

“I’ll look to bring as much energy to the team as possible, and giving my all is a minimum requirement.

“I’ve been lucky enough to score a few goals against Cambridge United in my career, so I’m now looking forward to scoring some wearing the Cambridge United shirt.”

A full interview with the U’s new addition is available to watch right now at CU Player here.

Meanwhile Manager Shaun Derry added: "I'm thrilled that we have been able to sign Piero.

"He's had a quite magnificent season for Accrington Stanley and was one of their stand out performers. The quality that he possesses will improve us for sure."

As the first player to put pen to paper with the U’s this summer, Mingoia has also arrived in the city in time to unveil the club’s brand new 2016/17 home kit.

In keeping with the tradition of Cambridge United Football Club, the new home jersey will once again take on the amber and black colours synonymous with the U's, but also includes a modern twist in style with the addition of pin stripes. As last season, Mick George will appear on the front of the shirt with Sepura on the back.

The retro black collar also refers back to a number of the U’s kits of yesteryear including the iconic jersey from the 1992-93 season.

Supporters are will be able to pre-order their new home jersey from the club shop, online at cufcdirect.com or by calling 01223 566 500 from 10am.
