Spillane Signs

23 August 2013

Michael Spillane signs for the U's.

Cambridge United are delighted to announce the signing of Michael Spillane from Southend United on a one-year contract.

Spillane, 24, came through the ranks at Norwich City, signing his first professional contract with the Canaries in 2006.

The versatile midfielder, who can also play along the back four, joined Luton Town on loan for the 2008/09 season, winning the Football League Trophy.

The former Republic of Ireland under 21 international signed a two-year contract extension with Norwich City in the summer of 2009, before signing with Brentford in July 2010 for an undisclosed fee.

A loan move to Dagenham & Redbridge followed in November 2011, made permanent in January 2012.  In January 2013 Michael signed for Southend United.

Spillane said:
"I'm delighted to be here and I can't wait to get going.  The plans the Club have, and the way Jez and Richard sold the club to me has got me really excited.  I can't wait to get going and push on for a successful season here."

He continued:
"I had other offers on the table, for more money, but I really believe in the project that Jez and Richard spoke about and wanted to be part of it.  The fact that it's a new challenge appeals to me so it all meant there was only one choice - that was Cambridge United."

Spillane will wear the number 22 shirt this season.

Cambridge United can also confirm that non-contract goalkeeper, Ben Wilson, has joined League Two Accrington Stanley and Luke Allen has joined Cambridge City on a one-month loan.
