Richard Money praises U’s desire at York
Richard Money complimented his side’s determination to fight back against York City on Saturday afternoon, that saw the U’s secure a valuable draw at Bootham Crescent.
Two goals from the Minstermen early in the second half had put United on the back foot in the clash, before Money’s side dug in their heels and struck twice in the final 20 minutes through Mark Roberts and Barry Corr to secure a point in the fixture.
The United boss felt the U’s had given a flavour of their full capability in the closing stages in North Yorkshire, and said it was pleasing to see the show of character from his side when needed.
“The players showed great desire and a never say die attitude to come back to 2-2 and in the end we probably should have won it,” he said.
“I was disappointed with what we did in the first hour, but very pleased with what we produced in the last 30 minutes. We are getting to know what we are capable in dribs and drabs, but exactly is difficult as we still have a number of players undercooked.
“We took a gamble to put Barry Corr, Ryan Donaldson and Jeff Hughes into the side together, because none of them have had a great deal of training. We have had to pick our time where we could reintroduce them to the side knowing that it would affect our ability to play at a high intensity for the full 90 minutes.
“Barry is a warrior and although I’m sure he’ll be stiff after the game, he stuck out the ninety minutes for us and perhaps could have even got the winner for us. It was a great effort to play the full match from both him and Jeff [Hughes].
“We were forced to play at a high intensity in the final half an hour on Saturday but I think we have shown people what we will be like when we get to full fitness and full speed.”
With 474 supporters making the journey to York this weekend, Money again thanked the empathy of the Amber Army and commended their continued backing during the 2015/16 season.
“I think the supporters were terrific again, and they have been brilliant with us this season. When you look at it in the cold light of day we should be doing better, and whilst I can explain the reasons as to why we are not the supporters have been very understanding.
“They have seen enough in the group to know that once we really get firing with everybody fit and well, there is a decent team there.”
Next up for the U’s, high flying Portsmouth visit the Abbey Stadium this Saturday and the club urging supporters to purchase tickets as soon as possible with over 4,500 sold already!
