MATCH PREVIEW: CAMBRIDGE UNITED VS AFC WIMBLEDON

1 January 2016

Look ahead to the first game of 2016!

Cambridge United begin 2016 with a clash against AFC Wimbledon at the Abbey Stadium, with Shaun Derry’s side looking to extend their unbeaten run in Sky Bet League Two to seven games.

The U’s carried their building momentum in some style through the Christmas period with a pair of wins over Dagenham & Redbridge and Barnet, ensuring that they burst into the New Year with the best form in the division.

The busy schedule did not however come without its blows, with Ryan Donaldson and Greg Taylor picking up long-term injuries that sees them join Keith Keane on the treatment table. Cambridge United have cancelled the contract of Jordan Chiedozie by mutual consent this week.

However, Shaun Derry’s side will be filled with optimism heading into the tussle with the Dons as they look to improve their run to six wins from seven Sky Bet League Two fixtures.

The visitors to the Abbey Stadium tomorrow clinched their first win since October last time out with a 2-0 victory against Exeter City. Despite a recent period of indifference they still sit 12th in the Sky Bet League Two table, three points behind the U’s and only four points off the play-offs.

Neal Ardley’s side were also recently buoyed with permission to build a new stadium close to their spiritual home in Plough Lane and the news may well spur the side on to push further up the League Two ladder in 2016.

Equipped with the likes of top goalscorer Lyle Taylor, the formidable Adebayo Akinfenwa and ex-U Tom Elliott among their forward options, the south London side certainly have the armory to do so.

The U’s ran out 2-1 winners when the sides met at Kingsmeadow earlier this season, with the sides level in the head to head records on two wins each.
