Steve Smith reviews the League Two action
WYCOMBE Wanderers moved top of League 2 after an impressive 3-1 victory over Morecambe at the Globe Arena on Saturday. Sam Wood give the visitors an early lead with a forty yard volley on his 100th appearance for the Chairboys. Paul Hayes soon doubled their lead from close range before Andy Fleming pulled one back for the Shrimps from Jamie Devitt's cross. Devitt was later sent off for pushing Peter Murphy before Joe Jacobson's free-kick sealed the win for Wycombe.
Wanderers were only able to move top due to Bury’s misfortune on their travels against AFC Wimbledon. Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a first half brace to put the hosts in control before Danny Mayor’s fierce strike brought the visitors back into the game after the break. However on loan striker, Matt Tubbs, poked home to make it 3-1 soon after before Ryan Lowe netted a penalty after 73 minutes to make the closing stages interesting.
Cambridge United scored five as they came from behind to smash Oxford United. Danny Hylton put the visitors in front, but Kwesi Appiah scored two goals in five minutes just before the break to give Cambridge the lead. Second half goals from Ryan Donaldson, Tom Elliott and Robbie Simpson made the win comfortable.
Hartlepool survived a late fightback from Exeter to move off the bottom of League 2. Michael Wood volleyed Pools ahead before Charlie Wyke doubled the host’s lead. The Grecians pulled one back through Christian Riberio but failed to find an equaliser.
Keith Curle’s Carlisle United recorded a third straight win as they smashed Stevenage 3-0 at Brunton Park. Brad Pott’s struck the Cumbrians in front after seventeen minutes before Steven Rigg doubled the hosts advantage just before the half hour when he finished from close range. Mark Beck then made the win free from danger three minutes from time.
Newport County moved within three points of the Play-Off’s after coming from behind to beat 10-man York at Rodney Parade. On-loan striker Diego De Girolamo's low finish fired the Minstermen in front early on, before Russell Penn saw red for a second bookable offence. Andrew Hughes’ low drive brought the visitors level before Chris Zebroski put Newport ahead. Darren Jones then hit a spectacular volley into the top corner to seal the win.
Alex McDonald scored a late free-kick as Burton edged past fellow promotion hopefuls Northampton. Burton initially took the lead through Jacob Blyth’s low strike but Ryan Cresswell fired the Cobblers level with ten minutes to go. However, just five minutes later McDonald had the last word to claim all three points for the Brewers.
Shrewsbury Town continued their impressive home form as they came from behind to beat Cheltenham 3-1. After a goalless first-half Bryon Harrison give the visitors the lead, but James Collins equalized for the hosts two minutes later. Further goals from Andy Mangan and Nathaniel Knight-Percival made the points secure for the hosts.
Reuben Reid's winner helped Plymouth Argyle record their third victory of the week as they narrowly beat Tranmere Rovers, who fell to the bottom of the League 2 table.
Goals from Alex Lawless and Mark Cullen strengthened Luton Town’s place in the Play-Off’s as they comfortably beat Southend United 2-0.
Ade Yusuff came off the bench to score both goals for Dagenham & Redbridge as they beat Accrington Stanley, who had been ahead through West Ham loanee, Sean Maguire.
And finally, Portsmouth and Mansfield shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park in front of 15,585 fans, with Paul Robinson equalising for Pompey after Simon Heslop had given the visitors the lead.
