Defender added to squad

Former Crawley Town defender Charlie Wassmer has joined Cambridge United on a deal until the end of the season.

Wassmer, 21, was signed by Crawley from Hayes & Yeading and was part of the Crawley side that won consecutive promotions from the Blue Square Bet Premier to npower League One.

He has found first-team opportunities limited at Broadfield Stadium this year; Wassmer was released by Crawley in December without making an appearance in npower League One, and joins the U's as a free agent.

U's head coach Richard Money said: "Charlie is a player that we have known about for some time and fits our profile.

"He's a talented young defender who has already had a big transfer move to Crawley, two promotions and has been highly regarded by clubs at a much higher level.

"For whatever reason he has become available and we are delighted that we have been able to sign him and give him the opportunity to earn a contract beyond the end of this season.  He is an interesting project and has the type of potential that we enjoy working with."
