MATCH REPORT | WYCOMBE 1 CAMBRIDGE UTD 0

Cambridge United were beaten 1-0 by Wycombe Wanderers as their Sky Bet League Two season came to a conclusion at Adams Park.

Scott Kashket’s second half header separated the sides on the afternoon, as both teams missed out on the top seven as Carlisle and Blackpool held on to their positions in play-off positions.

The U’s lined up with two changes as Gerry McDonagh and George Maris return to the starting 11 in place of Newton and Dunk.

United were forced to weather an early storm from the hosts with Kashket spurning a guilt-edged opportunity in the opening five minutes when he caught Leon Legge in possession before rounding Will Norris and then missing the target from a seemingly unmissable position.

George Maris came closest for the U’s after the winger drove into the Wycombe 18 yard box and drilled a firm cross against the shin of a covering Wycombe defender, which trickled inches wide of the near post.

A tight and fiercely contested first half continued to develop but it was the hosts who carved out the best opportunities, including another for Kashket who slammed a shot at the feet of Norris when through one-on-one with the keeper ten minutes before the break.

However, Kashket proved to be a thorn in the U’s side when he calmly headed home from close range after the hour mark as the forward latched on to the end of Akinfenwa’s assist back across goal.

United rallied in the late stages of the fixture with substitute Ben Williamson seeing his volley saved by Jamal Blackman, whilst Leon Legge had his right footed effort diverted off the line by Michael Harriman.

It proved not to be though and United ended the campaign applauding the superb travelling support of the Amber Army.
