CAMBRIDGE UNITED COMPLETE SIGNING OF GOALKEEPER DIMITAR MITOV

5 June 2017

Cambridge United have secured the services of Bulgarian youth international goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov on a two-year deal.

Mitov, 20, joins the U's following four years within Charlton Athletic's youth ranks where he impressed across a number of age brackets.

As well as featuring regularly in the Addicks' U18s, U21s and U23s squads in recent seasons, Dimitar has gained valuable experience on the international stage, captaining Bulgaria at both U17 and U19 level.

Mitov arrives at the Cambs Glass Stadium to add competition for the U's number one shirt to United's current shot stopper Will Norris, a prospect the Bulgarian is relishing.

He said: "When I came to meet the staff at the Club, I was made to feel very welcome and they convinced me that this was the right Club.

"I can take plenty of experience from my time at Charlton as I spent a lot of time around the first team there, as well as learning a lot from playing in the younger ages such as the U23s.

"I've also played for Bulgaria at every age level between U16s and U21s, and it has been a brilliant experience to play competitively for World Cups and Euros.

"It's great to be signing for Cambridge United, a Football League club which I can see will only help to improve my career.

"I'm really happy to get this over the line and I just want pre-season to start now."

On the arrival of the goalkeeper, Cambridge United Head Coach Shaun Derry added: "We all feel Dimitar has the major characteristics to progress his career here at Cambridge United.

"Physically and technically he has all the key ingredients to become a very good goalkeeper.

"Working with Kevin Pilkington and Will Norris everyday will no doubt bring his game to a whole new level."

Meanwhile, Head of Football Operations Ben Strang concluded: "It was important for us to bring a goalkeeper that has the potential to challenge Will for the jersey. Dimitar has an obvious drive and ambition to do that.

“The staff at Charlton speak very well of his capabilities and character. It is a vital transition though now for Dimitar to leave predominantly an U23 environment and come into a competitive First Team environment. He has good pedigree and many excellent attributes that will provide Kevin Pilkington with a really interesting project alongside the continued development of Will Norris.

“This signing concludes the first phase of our recruitment in this window. I am thrilled that we have been able to secure the signings of our genuine first choice targets in each of the highlighted positions.  We now have the foundations of a strong squad before the players return for pre-season training on 26th June.”
