As a Leicester-born youngster, naturally Dion Dublin’s footballing journey began within his home county, initially showing early talent with local youth teams Wigston Fields and Thurmaston Magpies, before Norwich City came calling in 1985 upon the completion of his school days.
Despite three seasons with the Canaries, the striker - although then known for his abilities as a centre back - failed to make his professional debut at Carrow Road, which eventually led to his departure in 1988. However, Norwich’s loss, was certainly the U’s gain, as Dublin signed on a free transfer.
Iconic Cambridge United Manager Chris Turner, soon recognised Dublin’s ability further up the field and it was to be a decision that would lead to successive promotions for the U’s, driven by the striker’s prolific goal scoring record.
His greatest day in amber and black came when he registered the first ever play-off final goal at Wembley Stadium, to earn promotion from the fourth division against Chesterfield at the conclusion of the 1989-90 season. However, arguably his continued form for United over the course of the next two seasons, which saw the U’s reach their highest ever League position (fifth in the second division), were equally impressive achievements.
When eventually he was sold by the club for a fee of £1.5m to Manchester United in 1992, Dublin’s Cambridge United record stood at 156 games played, 52 goals scored and two promotions.
