Manager Shaun Derry feels a resilient performance from the U’s ensures his side will take more than just a point from a 1-1 draw with table toppers Northampton Town.A dramatic finish at Sixfields Stadium saw Jimmy Spencer strike a late equaliser, which not only ignited wild celebrations in the away end of the ground but also from the U’s boss too.
Speaking to the post-match press about the display, Derry said: “We thoroughly deserved a point in my opinion against a real difficult opponent.
“The resilience was exactly right until the very last minute. Jimmy [Spencer] was deserving of scoring the equaliser today, because I thought he made a great impact when he came on.
“Without a doubt we can also take many positives in the way we played up to their goal. The game plan worked very well and really restricted Northampton to half chances. It was a scrappy game in terms of what happened in both boxes, but in the middle part of the pitch we contained them.
The United chief continued: “It was only that corner where one or two of our players just switched off at a crucial time that we then had a mountain to climb. But we got our boots on and found the goal that got us the point and we can go home happy because this is an incredibly tough ground to go to and get a result.”
The draw means that United have now matched their tally of 51 points from the 2014/15 season with ten games of the current campaign left to play, which is a notable achievement states Derry.
“The results have put us on 51 points ten games ahead of when we did it last year and that is a monumental achievement from everybody connected with the football club.
“We head into the final ten games of the season with a hunger to play for every single point.
“There will be certain games and times that become pivotal moments. We all want today to be that moment and for that desire and resolution in the 90th minute to give us a lot of encouragement going forward.
“We’re in a wonderful position because we are still right in it.”
