Southport 1-0 U's

CAMBRIDGE United suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 1-0 at Southport this afternoon.

The hosts took the lead after just two minutes, Matthew Brown scoring from an early corner.

The U's had chances to equalise in the first-half, Appiah and Cunnington seeing their efforts saved while Ian Miller headed over from a Mitch Austin corner just before the break.  Southport came close to extending their lead in the first period, Nathan Ellington firing just wide on two occasions and forcing Chris Maxwell into a fine save.

The U's started the second-half on the front foot pushing for the equaliser, forcing a number of corners but were unable to breach the Southport defence.  Appiah, Cunnington and Dunk all had chances for United, with Luke Berry coming closest late on, his superbly struck shot fizzed just wide of the Southport goal.  A late handball shout from the U's fell on deaf ears as they failed to find a breakthrough.
