A contentious penalty decision five minutes from time denied Cambridge United victory against Newport County.
The U's had taken a first half lead through loanee Josh Dawkin, but had to settle for a point in a feisty encounter where referee Paul Rees was at the centre of the action.
United made three changes, with Michael Wylde, Luke Berry and Dawkin coming in for Josh Coulson, Tom Shaw and Jack Eades, and the U's made a bright start, with Jonathon Thorpe making a good impression on the right flank.
They took the lead when Dawkin cut into the area and squeezed a shot past goalkeeper Glyn Thompson from a narrow angle. Thompson perhaps should have done better but could only help the ball into the goal.
After the break Newport came out all guns blazing, but it was United who came closest to scoring when James Jennings shot hit the inside of the post.
But five minutes from time the ball reared up against the hand of Kevin Roberts, and referee Rees pointed to the spot. Andy Sandell smashed home the penalty as the U's players continued to protest, Roberts' arm appeared to be at his side when the ball struck him.
The U's will now go to Alfreton on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways.
Man of the Match: Rory McAuley - A faultless performance at the heart of the defence.
FULL TIME: Cambridge United 1-1 Newport County
21.36: Four minutes to be added, genuinely shocked by the awfulness of the decision that led to the equaliser. Now the Exiles have a free kick, which is better than a corner on their left. In it comes, the U's head clear, and that's full-time. United denied another win
21.29: Tiryaki gets down the side and drills in a low cross which misses everyone in the centre, so close.
21.27: GOAL CAMBRIDGE UNITED 1-1 NEWPORT. Blimey, to say that's a contentious decision is putting it mildly. Cross comes in and hits Roberts on the arm. The defender's arm is by his side but the referee points to the penalty spot. The U's players are furious, Roberts gets a booking, and Andy Sandell rams in the spot kick, all square.
21.23: Michael Wylde stretches to make a tackle as Newport advance down their right and goes down in a heap. That's not good, given that the skipper is just back from a groin op. After some treatment it's apparent he can't continue, Blaine Hudson is on, awful luck for Wylde and United.
21.18: Great interception from McAuley foils Harris after Gash's miscontrol on the edge of his own box presented him with a chance to shoot. That's Gash's last contribution, Tiryaki is on in his place.
21.15: Ryan Jackson on for United, replacing Thorpe as the U's line up a free kick, Roberts the man fouled. In it comes from Jennings to the back post, but Gash can't get the crucial touch and it's out for a goal kick.
21.12: Just before that change Pugh had got the wrong side of Warren, but his shot was straight at Thompson. Newport making their last change now, Reid on for Knights.
21.10: Warren can't continue, and Newport have to make a change. Wayne Hatswell gets a warm welcome as he takes to the pitch.
21.07: Tonight's attendance at the R Costings Abbey Stadium is 1,815, with 64 away fans. Newport's Warren has just been receiving some treatment after taking a blow to the head as he tried to win a header from a corner.
21.06: Drama at both ends there. Harris has looked lively since coming on, and finds space on the right before delivering a cross which McAuley manages to hook away with Jarvis waiting. Then United break, and the ball finds Jennings, who cuts infield and drives in a low which hits the inside of the post and comes back out, so close. A defender reaches the rebound and can clear.
20.58: Another shot from Rose flies wide. United struggling to get out of their own half at the moment.
20.52: Newport work it in from their right, Porter takes aim but completely misses the ball, which spins into the path of Rose. His shot is on target but Naisbitt holds on.
20.49: Dawkin carries the ball down the left and finds Pugh, who plays a one-two with Thorpe but flashes a shot wide from 25 yards.
20.47: The match has just restarted. Jake Harris is on for Newport in place of Buchanan, who was anonymous in the first half.
HALF TIME: Cambridge United 1-0 Newport County
20.31: That's half-time, United 1-0 up thanks to a nice bit of skill from Josh Dawkin and a slice of luck. Not tonnes of goal mouth action, but a definite improvement on Saturday.
20.30: One minute to be added, the game has gone off the boil somewhat in the last few minutes. Newport have a free kick which eventually finds Rose on the right flank, but his cross spins off a couple of heads and is claimed by Naisbitt.
20.20: Yellow card. That'll be tonight's first booking, Romone Rose kicks out in frustration at Jennings, poor tackle. Jarvis delivers the free kick but it's low and easily cleared.
20.16: Corner to United now, Hughes slicing Jarvis's cross behind. In it comes, McAuley gets a firm header on the ball but the whistle goes for some pushing.
20.15: Great pace from Thorpe, he's away from his man and delivers a low cross, but Pugh and Berry arrive at the near post and the same time and one of them puts the ball wide of the post, good chance.
20.12: Berry makes a brave block as Knights thunders a shot in from 20 yards. That hurt the youngster, he'll need treatment but is soon back on his feet, as it was ever in any doubt that he'd continue.
20.09: GOAL CAMBRIDGE UNITED 1-0 NEWPORT. It's a first United goal for Josh Dawkin, and the U's are ahead. After working the ball across from the right, James Jennings, finds Dawkin, who brushes past Paul Rodgers, advances into the area, and from a very narrow angle right near the touchline his low shot finds the net. Thompson got hands on that and rather deflected it in, don't think the visiting keeper will want to see that again.
20.07: A long throw is allowed to bounce in the box, and McAuley has to head behind. Corner comes in to the near post but Kevin Roberts makes a brave header to clear.
20.05: Better from United, Pugh finding Thorpe, whose cross is just about cut out before it reaches Gash. Berry tries to latch on to the rebound, but is crowded out as he tries to make room for a shot on the edge of the area.
20.02: Andy Sandell controls the rebound from his own throw on down in the right corner, and makes space for a cross, but Rory McAuley gets a crucial header on the ball to clear with Jarvis and Buchanan lurking.
19.58: Definitely more tempo to this match than Saturday's, Newport look keen to move the ball quickly, as do United, though passes going astray a fair bit.
19.55: The referee's whistle has been blowing incessantly since the start of the match, and Hughes gets a talking to for upending Thorpe. Both teams have a Jarvis and a Hughes, though luckily for me United's Hughesy is on the bench.
19.51: No real pattern to the game in the first five minutes, Newport with a free kick now, it's long into the box, bounces off a couple of heads and Berry makes an interception with Lee Evans poised to shoot. Evans is apparently a Newport youth teamer, not the rubber-limbed comedian.
19.48: Long free kick from Naisbitt looking for Gash, who gets a flick on and Warren has to whack it clear with Pugh threatening. That'll be a throw on right in the corner. Roberts tries to find Gash again but Newport can clear.
19.45: We're underway. United attacking the South Stand as Newport kick off.
19.43: The team's are out. Last year Newport won this fixture 1-0, a particularly dismal day amongst many dismal days. Hopefully tonight's match will be an all-together happier occasion for those of an amber and black persuasion.
Cambridge United: Naisbitt, Roberts, Jennings, McAuley, Wylde, Thorpe (Jackson 72), Dawkin, Jarvis, Berry, Pugh, Gash (Tiryaki 76). Subs: Tiryaki, Hughes, Jackson, Hudson, Eades.
Newport County: Thompson, Rodgers, Warren (Hatswell 68), Hughes, Sandell, Knights (Reid 70), Evans, Porter, Rose, Buchanan (Harris 45), Jarvis. Subs: Hatswell, Harris, Greening, Reid, Darlow.
19.20: TEAM NEWS: United make three changes to the starting line-up, with Michael Wylde, Josh Dawkin, and Luke Berry replacing Josh Coulson, Tom Shaw and Jack Eades. Shaw and Coulson are both out injured, while Eades is on the bench alongside Ryan Jackson, who is back after a groin problem. Newport include ex-U's Daryl Knights and Max Porter, with Wayne Hatswell on the bench. We don't want any of his free-kick antics later.
19.15: Hello everyone and welcome to the R Costings Abbey Stadium for tonight's match between Cambridge United and Newport County. The U's are looking to get back to winning ways after Saturday's disappointing defeat to Gateshead, while the visitors are still looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone.
